Centro Histórico (Walled City)
Inside the colonial walls, you'll find upscale restaurants, wine bars, and rooftop cocktail lounges with stunning views. The nightlife here is more refined — dinner transitions into drinks at places with 400-year-old stone walls and candlelit courtyards. More expensive than Getsemaní but worth it for the atmosphere.
Bocagrande
The modern beachfront strip with larger clubs, casinos, and a more commercial nightlife scene. This is where you'll find the bigger dance clubs and late-night venues. Less charming than Getsemaní or the Walled City but more diverse in terms of venue size.
When to Go Out
Cartagena's rhythm is more relaxed than Bogotá or Medellín. Dinner starts around 8-9 PM, drinks from 10 PM, and dancing from midnight. Thursday through Saturday are the big nights. Sunday can be surprisingly active in Getsemaní.
Safety in Cartagena
Cartagena is generally safe for tourists in the main zones. The biggest risks are petty theft (phone snatches), overcharging by taxis, and drink spiking at bars. Stay in Getsemaní, the Walled City, or Bocagrande. Use ride apps. Don't walk to or from Getsemaní to Bocagrande at night — take a car.
